January 2024 marked the beginning of Mayor Jeff Phillips’ term. As of mid-October, I had the opportunity to discuss his plans and vision for Rensselaer, Indiana’s future.
Plans for Local Businesses
When asked about supporting local businesses, Mayor Phillips emphasized the importance of downtown infrastructure development, including water, sewer, gas, and electric upgrades. He highlighted the recently completed brick streets project and the securing of $1.8 million to redesign Van Rensselaer St and Harrison St around the Courthouse. This project has already attracted a new ice cream business to downtown. Future plans include partnering with the county government to repair sidewalks and potentially build a pavilion for the farmers market using grant funds.
Future Plans
Regarding Rensselaer’s future, Mayor Phillips aims to continue collaborating with Jasper County Government and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to improve the SR 114 and I65 intersection. The city will extend water, sewer, and gas services to the west side of I65, facilitating growth. Once infrastructure is in place, INDOT will review the traffic safety study to enhance safety along SR 114. The goal is to establish a walking/bike path from Brookside Park to the I65 intersection.
Main Goal
Mayor Phillips’ primary objective is to raise expectations for those living, working, and visiting Rensselaer. The city boasts beautiful art murals, recognized by the Indiana Arts Commission. Recent initiatives include painting the newest water tower and engaging community programs like Senior Service Day.
Key Challenges
According to Mayor Phillips, Rensselaer’s main issue is achieving compliance with its long-term control plan, initiated in 2010. Progress includes completing the wet weather treatment facility and upgrading the main lift station. Next steps involve addressing the wastewater treatment facility and combined sewer overflows, expected to take 3-4 years and several million dollars.
