This past weekend, Rensselaer’s own Senior golfer Carly Drone brought home the Individual Hoosier Conference Girls Conference medal by winning the entire tournament and scoring a 79.
She was asked how it felt winning the Hoosier Conference this year. Carly stated “it feels great it is her senior year.” Her freshman and junior year, she didn’t make All Conference, and got honorable mention her sophomore year, so “winning feels incredible this year, since it’s my last year” Carly stated. She also accomplished breaking a personal best
score of 80, by scoring 79.
Carly was inspired to start golf because when she was young her mom started putting her in camps and tournaments. She was encouraged to do an individual sport. She fell in love with golf! Plus, she gets tan!
To prepare for her matches, she starts by stretching when arriving at the course. She goes to the range and hits 15 golf balls with her sand wedge, pitching wedge, 7 iron, and driver. After she does that, she goes to chip and putt. Afterwards, she relaxes and starts to focus.
In order to inspire others interested in golf, she says “it’s all a mental game.” She would recommend learning the basics of golf and doing different drills. She says to practice in their free time, not stress about scores, and just have fun!
Congratulations to Carly for bringing home the Individual Championship and to the rest of the Bombers who had a great day! Sectional play starts Monday September 23rd at Tippecanoe County Country Club.
